Thank you, counselors

Thank you, counselors

It's National School Counseling Week! Join us in recognizing the important work our school counselors do to know, value and support every student. School counselors wear many hats: They support student social-emotional learning, help students during times of crisis, and equip students with the tools they need to achieve their academic and career goals. Thank you, counselors!

Counselor highlight

Cynthia Cuellar and Diana Herrera, our bilingual school counselors at Sumner High School, are an incredible asset to the community. This past year, they supported students in connecting with La Cima, a bilingual leadership camp for Latina and Latino students to develop self-identity, a sense of empowerment and leadership skills to better serve their schools and communities. As faculty advisors to the Latino Student Union and members of the Equity Council, they consistently work to amplify student voice and promote belonging. Their dedication, advocacy, and commitment to equity make a meaningful difference for our students every day.

Dandy the Therapy Dog

Meet Dandy, an 11-year-old therapy dog helping students and staff at Sumner High School on Mondays and Wednesdays. We asked Dandy – and his owner, Eileen – some important questions for National School Counseling Week this week.

  • What are your therapy dog credentials?
I was bred to be a service dog, and previously worked as one before starting at Sumner High School in September. This is my retirement gig. It’s great – I have a staff badge and everything!
  • How do you help students at SHS?
I’m really good at picking up on people’s emotions, and love to sit down with them for pets and snuggles. I can help calm students down if they need emotional support.
  • What’s your favorite snack?
Carrots. I have to keep a lean diet for my training!
