Extracurricular Academic Standards

To ensure that extracurricular participation supports student academic progress, an individual student must achieve and maintain a minimum standard of academic achievement.   To be eligible to participate in interscholastic competition at the high school level, in addition to the WIAA requirements, students must maintain a minimum of a 2.0 GPA, and pass all classes as a full-time student.   To be eligible to participate in interscholastic competition at the middle school level, in addition to WIAA requirements, students must maintain a 2.0 average for all standards-based components. The last grading period of a student’s 8th grade year will determine initial eligibility for 9th grade fall season participation at the high school.

Hardship Appeal for Varsity Eligibility

Students entering 9th grade are eligible for any level of competition at the high school they are registered at. If a student in grades 10-12 is attending a non-resident high school, the student may be restricted from varsity eligibility for one calendar year unless they move as a family unit or are able to prove that a hardship exists. In cases that meet the hardship definition, students may appeal the varsity eligibility restriction.

WIAA Hardship Definition
A hardship exists only when some unique circumstances concerning the student’s physical or emotional status exist and only when such circumstances are not the result of acts or actions by the student or family unit. Usual maturation problems or family situations that do not cause severe and abnormal emotional problems and academic or athletic deficiencies in a school’s curriculum or extracurricular activities do not constitute a hardship.
